Sandstone Bed and Breakfast

Sandstone Bed and Breakfast, located just north of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in Little Harbour, is a renovated (c1850) farmhouse which has two spacious air conditioned rooms with queen beds, ensuite 4 piece bathrooms, WIFI, cellular access, Satellite TV service and a coffee maker in each room. Included is a full breakfast from our menu. This Bed and Breakfast has been rated as a 4 ½ star accommodation by Canada Select.

Our central location puts us close to Melmerby Beach Provincial Park (5Km) one of the most popular beaches in Nova Scotia with life guard service, change rooms, toilets, & showers  and to Powell’s Point Provincial Park (1 Km.) where you can hike, bike, picnic, kayak & swim. Both beaches boast of having the warmest waters north of the Carolinas. Nearby there are 3 golf courses namely the Abercrombie Country Club (12 km.), the Glen Lovat Golf Club (9 km), and the Eagles Chance (Par 3) Golf course (15 km). The ferry terminal to/from PEI is only 30 minutes away. Port Hastings, your entry point to Cape Breton Island, is 110 km east of here. St. FX University in Antigonish is a 45 minute drive. The Halifax Stanfield International Airport is only 140 km or 1 ½ hour car ride.

The farmhouse is situated near the centre of 5 acres of rolling countryside which includes many large maple, spruce, pine and birch trees and undulating green fields. The humming birds, chickadees, gold finches and other wild birds can be viewed at the feeders from our screened porch and the deer may make an appearance nibbling on the grassy knolls or eating fallen apples from the dozen or more apple trees on our property.

Our breakfasts are prepared from locally grown food as much as possible. For example our bacon and sausages come from a local Nova Scotia meat processor, “The Pork Shop”. Bev’s home-made muffins and fresh fruit cocktail are specialities of the house and our home-made jams are a favourite topping for toast.

Other nearby attractions include:

In New Glasgow/Stellarton (10 km), explore the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry, where displays depict the history of industry in the area and the changes that occurred due to mechanization. For the art lover The Crombie House is certainly a must-see attraction. It was the home of the late Frank Sobey and his wife Irene and now houses the “Sobey Collection” of Canadian artists including The Group of Seven and many others. Tours are available on Wednesdays throughout July and August. The Carmichael-Stewart House Museum on Temperance St. houses historical Pictou County artifacts, local glassware, china and photographs. The Memorial honours the miners who lost their lives in 1992 in an explosion at the Westray Mine, a coal mine right under New Glasgow.

In Pictou (23 km) explore the Hector Heritage Museum with a full size floating replica of the ship that brought the first Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia. Next door to the Hector visit the Nova Scotia Fisheries Museum which has among other things a display of some infantile lobster being incubated.
