Cobequid Trail

The Cobequid Trail is a 17-km network of walking and cycling trails in central Colchester County, part of the Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley region. Travel along a former railway, through Acadian dykelands and farmland, through forests and along brooks, and beside the tidal Salmon River from Cobequid Bay to its tributaries. Explore the area’s nature and wildlife (including bird watching) while walking, hiking, cycling, skiing or snowshoeing along the trail. Please note that all sections are non-motorized.

The trail includes 11 km of continuous rail trail between downtown Truro and Old Barns on the former Dominion Atlantic Railway, a railway built in 1898 and operated until 1982. This section of the D.A.R. was known as the Midland Line, an important link between Truro and Windsor. The grade along this section of the trail is almost flat, with very few slight inclines. From the east end, the trail begins at King Street near the Nova Scotia Community College in downtown Truro, crosses McClure's Brook, and passes by the Truro Golf Course and an industrial area. Continuing west, the trail passes by marshlands, Acadian dykes and farmland in Lower Truro and continues to the Cobequid Bay look-off, with a rest area from which the famous tidal bore can be seen. Keep going west for what is arguably the most scenic part of the trail as it follows the tidal Salmon River as it meets the Cobequid Bay. There is opportunity to see the tidal bore (you might hear it before you see it!) and, in season, migrating shorebirds. Watch for bald eagles and osprey (Nova Scotia’s provincial bird) along the river too. The view across the river is of the farmland of Fort Belcher.

An additional 6 km of the Cobequid Trail is located in Bible Hill and Valley.  The trail begins at College Road, meanders through the attractive Dalhousie Agricultural Campus and the university farm and along a ridge offering views of the Salmon River (about 2 km). This section joins up to trails in the Bible Hill Recreation Park. From the Rec Park, follow the sidewalk for about 1.5 km up College Road to Maple Blvd and Scenic Avenue to reach the Eagle Crest section (1 km) of the Cobequid Trail, a lovely trail through maple stands, hemlock ravines and offering views overlooking the Salmon River. Continue about another 1 km via sidewalks and short trail sections across College Road and Pictou Road to another section of the trail along Farnham Brook. The Farnham Brook section (3 km) passes through forests and crosses the brook several times; listen and watch for songbirds as you stroll.

The Cobequid Trail is great for off-road cycling, long distance running, leisurely walks, and wildlife viewing. The trail has numerous rest areas with benches and picnic tables.
